The initial intent behind the patent system was to create a repository of knowledge that was publicly available. In exchange for sharing an idea through the patent system, a grantee was given exclusive economic rights to work employing the patent for a set amount of time. Somewhere along the way something went awry.
The goal isn’t to make an iPhone killer or iPad killer anymore, rather it is to make an Android killer. Apple and Microsoft are the one’s playing catch-up now.
Computer hardware was largely what got me interested in computing, but what has happened is that computer hardware and computers in general have been commoditized.

Whether or not the Surface and Google Tablet will catch on is anyone’s guess. If anything, it will up the ante for OEM’s and perhaps motivate them to make better, smaller, and cheaper products that consumers will want to buy.
Apple going on the defensive? It’s difficult to say. And with Microsoft upping the ante this fall with Windows 8, things are likely only to get nastier….
